SACRAMENTO (Triple-A)
The RiverCats added Sean Gallagher Thursday when the onetime Chicago Cub pitcher was optioned to Sacramento by the As. Gallagher willjoin the starting rotation and make his first start in Sacramento on Saturday night against Las Vegas (Blue Jays).
Even though Sacramento lost 5-1 in Portland (Padres) Friday afternoon, Vin Mazzaro continued his bid to join fellow phenoms Brett Anderson and Trevor Cahill in Oakland. With Oakland needing a starting pitcher next Friday (when Josh Outmans turn comes up), Mazzaro is making it tough for the As not to bring him up.
Mazzaro gave up just four hits and one unearned run in six innings Friday, walking four and striking out three. His ERA fell to 1.65. Sacramento lost when reliever Chris Schroder gave up a grand slam to Sean Kazmar in the 8th inning.
Heres the recap from Thursdays game, where the ?Cats got an outstanding effort from Gio Gonzalez (4 2/3 innings, 3 H, 0 R, 8 Ks) in a 3-0 loss to Portland (Padres).
Heres the recap from Wednesdays game, when Edgar Gonzalez and four relievers silenced Portland (Padres) in a 3-1 Sacramento win.
Daric Barton returned to the lineup Wednesday after missing Tuesdays game as a precaution from getting hit on the elbow with a pitch on Monday. Barton went 0-for-3 Friday and is batting .125 in 15 games.
Utilityman Eric Patterson continues to be a force offensively. Patterson is hitting .327 and leads the team with seven SBs.
MIDLAND (Double-A)
The As have their own version of ?The Piano Man in shortstop Adrian Cardenas, who shows in this video that he can do more than hit the Baseball. Cardenas is hitting .364 thus far in Midland.
Heres the recap from Thursdays game, when Midland beat San Antonio (Padres) 9-3 behind Travis Banwarts solid start.
Chris Carter drove in two more runs and leads the Texas League with 18. After a slow start, the first baseman is also hitting .315.
Ex-Sonoma State star Tommy Everidge, last years first baseman at Midland, has been playing third base. The 26-year-old, who hit 22 homers and drove in 115 last year with the Rockhounds, could be in the third-base mix in Oakland at some point.
STOCKTON (High Single-A)
Stockton fell to 2-13 after its 6-5 loss to Bakersfield on Thursday.
First baseman Matt Spencer had a pair of hits and has boosted his average to .232. Catcher Raul Padron, who was serving as Sacramentos backup until Eric Munson returned last week, now has two home runs in six at-bats for the Ports.
KANE COUNTY (Low Single-A)
Shawn Haviland (2-0, 2.65) benefitted from the Cougars offensive explosion as he pitched Kane County past Burlington (Royals) in an 8-4 win.
Haviland struck out seven and permitted just two hits and two runs in six innings. Third baseman Jason Christian sparked the offense with a three-run home run in the Cougars six-run third inning.
Meanwhile, Burlington first baseman Eric Hosmer, the No. 3 overall choice in last years draft, continued his slow start. His 0-for-3 dropped his average to .154.
