Juan Uribe starts at short, brings up memories of Jose
SAN DIEGO For the first time in almost 17 years, the Giants had a Uribe start at shortstop.

Juan Uribe, the nephew of former Giants fan favorite Jose Uribe, was 1-for-3 while giving Edgar Renteria a breather in the Giants' 6-1 loss to the San Diego Padres on Sunday at Petco Park.

The moment held meaning for Juan Uribe, who said he doesn't go a day without thinking of his late uncle. Jose Uribe died in a car accident in December, 2006. He was 47.

"He came home after every season and told me about the big leagues," said Juan Uribe, who proudly wears his uncle's No. 23. "He said everybody on your team is your family. You're together every day and you work hard for each other to win. I try to be like him."

Giants pitching coach Dave Righetti vividly remembered details of Jose Uribe's last game as a Giant. It was Oct. 4, 1992, the season finale, at Cincinnati. The Giants won 6-2 in 13 innings. Righetti pitched two relief innings to get the victory. Uribe started a double play to help him escape the 11th.

"Roger Craig gave me the game ball," Righetti said. "It was a big deal because we thought it was the last game in San Francisco Giants history. Everyone was thinking we'd be in Tampa the next year."

Righetti sees Juan Uribe leading cheers with the fans in batting practice and he's reminded of his former teammate.

"Jose was a heck of a guy," Righetti said. "We all miss him. He was well loved by everyone on the team. Just his demeanor, the way he carried himself "... every team needs that infectious kind of personality."

Short hops

Right-hander Joe Martinez (skull fracture) was transferred from the intensive care unit to a private hospital room. He'll remain under observation for another day or two, trainer Dave Groeschner said. ... Giants pinch hitters were 0-for-10 before Nate Schierholtz lined a single in the eighth inning. ... Padres catcher Nick Hundley had a career-high four hits, including three off Tim Lincecum. Familiarity might have helped. Hundley grew up in the Seattle area and said he faced Lincecum in summer league games when they were 15 years old. Hundley, who played at the University of Arizona, also batted against Lincecum in the Pac-10 Conference.
