DENVER (AP) - The San Diego Padres called up left-hander Arturo Lopez from Triple-A Portland on Tuesday and optioned outfielder Drew Macias to their top farm club.
Lopez had a 3.14 ERA and 15 strikeouts in seven relief appearances at Portland. Going into Tuesday night's game against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field, he had never pitched in the majors."I felt that after the past two games, our bullpen was stretched," San Diego manager Bud Black said. "It was better that we had 13 pitchers and that's good in case we have a Colorado-type game."
The Padres also designated right-hander Mike Ekstrom for assignment.
