quot;He tweaked it just a little bit,quot; manager John Russell said, adding that McLouth will be re-evaluated Saturday.
The Pirates already are without cleanup hitter Ryan Doumit, who is recovering from surgery to repair a fractured wrist.
quot;It's gonna hurt, losing two of our top hitters,quot; said closer Matt Capps, who allowed Brian Giles' game-winning single in the 11th. quot;Losing Doumit was a big blow. Hopefully, Nate's injury is not a long-term thing. We've got the pieces to piece it together.quot;
Losing McLouth forced Russell to shuffle the lineup, moving Jack Wilson into the No. 2 spot and dropping Freddy Sanchez to third.
With the game tied in the ninth inning, Nyjer Morgan led off with an infield single. Wilson tried to bunt Morgan over, but instead popped out to the catcher. It was a tough night for Wilson, who struck out with the bases loaded to end the sixth.
With Sanchez batting, Morgan was caught leaning and picked off. Sanchez then flied out to right field.
Pinch-hitter Chris Burke led off the 11th with a walk, then stole second. Giles lined a fastball from Capps (0-1) into right field.
quot;If I do it 100 more times, I'm going to be succesful 99 of them,quot; Capps said. quot;It's hard to throw him something else when he's not getting around on any of the other fastballs I threw him.quot;
The Pirates took a 1-0 lead in the second inning against righty Kevin Correia. With one out, Eric Hinske was hit by a pitch. Brandon Moss grounded into a fielder's choice, Hinkse out at second.
Andy LaRoche walked on four pitches. Jason Jaramillo fell behind 0-2, but worked a nine-pitch walk, loading the bases.
Ian Snell slapped the first pitch up the middle for a single, scoring Moss. It was Snell's sixth career RBI, his frirst since July 23.
It took just one pitch for the Padres to tie the game. In the bottom of the inning, Adrian Gonzalez tomahawked Snell's first offering to center field for a solo home run.
The Padres build a 3-1 lead with a couple of two-out hits.
Luis Rodriguez began the third with a double to right. Correia sacrficed him to third. But Jody Gerut flied out to shallow center and David Eckstein fell behind 1-2, meaning Snell was just a pitch away from escaping unscathed.
Or not.
Eckstein hit a liner which hugged the third base line. The ball rolled into the left field corner and Eckstein had an RBI triple.
With Chase Headley at second with two outs in the fourth, Nick Hundley roped a run-scoring double to left-center.
The inning nearly got away from Snell, but he got by with a bit of luck.
Rodriguez was intentionally walked and Correia singled to center, loading the bases.
Gerut hit a smash up the middle, which seemed sure to end up a run-scoring hit. But instead, the ball went directly into Snell's glove, which he stuck out mostly as a follow-through on his delivery.
Better to be lucky than good? Yeah, sometimes.
The Pirates tied the game in the sixth. Adam LaRoche walked. Hinske hit a fly ball to deep right. Brian Giles backpedaled, measured it, went to make a backhanded catch at the wall ... and the ball popped out of his glove for a double.
Brandon Moss' ground out scored LaRoche ? Moss' first RBI of the season. Andy LaRoche singled to center, scoring Hinske to make it 3-3.
An intentional walk to Nyjer Morgan loaded the bases with two outs, but Jack Wilson struck out swinging.
