Brian Giles issued a statement through his attorney Dec. 23 "categorically" denying the allegations made by his former girlfriend, Cheri Olvera.

Olvera claims, in a $10 million suit filed against the Padres right fielder, that Giles physically and mentally abused her during their five-year relationship with one incident resulting in a miscarriage.

"There are two sides to every story and I am eager to tell mine," Giles said in a statement released by his attorney, James D. Scott. "I ask that everyone withhold judgment until I have a chance to tell my side of the story.

"I categorically deny each and every allegation of the complaint for palimony. This is all about money. The marriage never took place because the plaintiff changed her mind about a prenuptial agreement.

"The statement that I promised before marriage to divide my property (with) plaintiff if we ever separated or died is nonsense."

In between the suit being filed and Giles' comments, it was discovered that the Padre entered into a plea agreement for a misdemeanor domestic violence charge involving Olvera that stemmed from a videotaped incident at a Phoenix night spot on Aug. 27, 2006.

The case was dropped last February after Giles produced evidence of completing anger-management counseling. The Padres became aware late during the 2006 season that Giles was involved in an incident at the Phoenix bar.

Said Giles, 37, in his statement: "I categorically deny the allegation that I perpetuated a continuing course of domestic violence on the plaintiff. There was an incident in Phoenix which I regret.

"I want the team and the fans of baseball to know that I am sorry it happened. I addressed the problem and the case was dismissed by the court. At no time did I hit, kick or push the plaintiff so that it caused her to miscarry.

"My focus will be on baseball just as it has been throughout my entire career."

Before the suit was filed, the Padres picked up the $9 million option for Giles for 2009.
