The Padres ace and 2007 Cy Young Award winner was making his club-record fourth consecutive opening-day start Tuesday against the Dodgers in Petco Park.
In his first three such assignments, Peavy was 3-0 and had allowed only one run on 10 hits over 20 innings while striking out 15. Last year, the Padres lost 99 games even with Peavy winning on opening day.
And Peavy was 13-1 lifetime against the Dodgers with a 2.32 ERA in 22 starts.
So what is to become of the Padres?
The Dodgers beat Peavy on Tuesday, scoring four runs against the right-hander on seven hits over seven innings. Los Angeles opened the game with two runs in the top of the first, added an unearned run in the third thanks to an errant Peavy pickoff throw and capped the scoring on Matt Kemp's 416-foot homer to straight-away center leading off the seventh.
DODGERS 4, PADRES 1: The Dodgers' first three runs against Jake Peavy scored on two-out singles -- a two-run shot by 1B James Loney in the first and a shot to center by RF Andre Ethier in the third. The Dodgers were 3-for-8 against Peavy when there were two men out.
