"I felt like I was running on air when I was jogging in," Bell said. "I didn't realize they (the 20,035 at Petco Park) would be that loud."
Bell struck out the side -- Matt Kemp, Doug Mientkiewicz and Rafael Furcal -- around a one-out walk to Casey Blake to preserve the Padres' first win of the season and record the third save of his career.
For those keeping count, that leaves Bell 549 saves behind Hoffman's San Diego record and 551 shy of his all-time mark.
"I'm not going to beat his all-time record," Bell joked. "His Padre record is my goal."
Bell added, "I love doing what I just did. Before every pitch, I was just telling myself go ahead and pitch."
PADRES 4, DODGERS 2: Behind the pitching of Chris Young and three relievers and the timely hitting and baserunning of Chase Headley, the Padres evened their record at 1-1. Working six innings in his season debut for the first time in his career, Young allowed two runs on five hits. Headley hit a two-run double off Dodgers starter Randy Wolf in the sixth to give the Padres a 3-2 lead. He then advanced to third on a short foul fly down the right field line and scored on Luis Rodriguez's sacrifice fly.
