The 22-year-old Cabrera had started four of the Padres' first 13 games and gave the team an element of speed lacking elsewhere on not only the Padres' major league roster but throughout much of their system.
Cabrera, who was off to a 4-for-13 start with the bat and had scored four runs, also looked comfortable in the field -- turning double plays in pressure situations while making no errors in 33 innings.
"He's a good player, a nice-looking player," Padres manager Bud Black said of Cabrera, who backed up Luis Rodriguez at short.
While discussing Cabrera's injury after Philadelphia's 5-4 win Sunday, general manager Kevin Towers admitted the Padres might have to look outside the organization to find another shortstop.
Rodriguez has done a solid job thus far, but the loss of Cabrera leaves David Eckstein as the only other Padre capable of playing short -- and the Padres are committed to playing Eckstein at second.
You have to go down to low Class A to find a shortstop prospect in the organization, Drew Cumberland at Fort Wayne.
PHILLIES 5, PADRES 4: After picking up saves in three consecutive come-from-behind Padres victories, Heath Bell was told to take Sunday off. Too bad. The Padres needed Bell, who leads the National League with seven saves. The Padres took a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the ninth. But designated closer Edwin Moreno gave up a single to Ryan Howard and a two-run, game-ending homer to Raul Ibanez before he got an out.
