Padres pitching stalwarts Jake Peavy and Chris Young have one thing in common -- a 5.74 ERA.
That's right. Both Padres aces have a 5.74 ERA after five starts, which doesn't bode well for the Padres. If Peavy and Young can't win, who else in this rotation can? And when Young imploded for the second time in three starts Monday night at Coors Field in Denver, it marked the fourth straight game the Padres have lost with Peavy or Young starting.
Young gave up eight runs on seven hits and a season-high five walks in just three innings. He has given up 15 runs on 16 hits and seven walks in 6 2/3 innings in his two starts bookending the seven-innings of shutout ball he pitched Wednesday in San Francisco.
As for Peavy, he has given up five and six earned runs in his last two starts, marking the first time since 2006 that he has given up five or more runs in back-to-back starts. Over his last 11 innings, Peavy has been tagged for 11 runs on 13 hits and seven walks in just 11 innings.
The Padres are just 5-5 in the 10 games started by Peavy and Young and 5-4 in games started by what is considered the unstable back of their rotation.
ROCKIES 12, PADRES 7: The Rockies pounded out 17 hits against struggling Padres starter Chris Young and four relievers. Young never got an out in the fourth, giving up eight runs on seven hits and a season-high five walks. The Padres led 4-2 when the Rockies scored four runs in both the third and fourth. Padres pitchers have given up 30 runs on 42 hits in the last three games. And the Padres have had two three-game losing streaks in a span of seven games.
