San Diego Padres Inside Pitch 2009-05-02

San Diego Padres Inside Pitch 2009-05-02
Jake Peavy pitched eight great innings against the Dodgers Friday night.

And it was a lost cause.

Clearly, Peavy was the most dominant player at Dodger Stadium. He gave up two hits and a walk while striking out eight. No Dodger reached second against Peavy, who retired the last seven hitters he faced and 15 of the last 16.

But it wasn't enough. The Padres' offense is struggling and the bullpen has gone south. It was as though Peavy had no chance.

While the Dodgers were advancing no one to second against Peavy, the Padres had runners in scoring position in five innings and twice had runners on second with no one out.

The results -- zero. The Padres were 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position. And as soon as Peavy departed, the game was lost as Duaner Sanchez walked in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth. Over the last seven games, the Padres' bullpen has given up 27 runs (25 earned) in 26 innings.

DODGERS 1, PADRES 0: With a ninth loss in their last 11 games, the Padres fell below .500 for the first time since April 8. Russell Martin won a 10-pitch battle with Padres reliever Duaner Sanchez with two out in the bottom of the ninth, drawing a bases-loaded walk to force in the game's lone run.
