San Diego Padres Inside Pitch 2009-05-08
The Padres' situational numbers are not good.

Before Edgar Gonzalez and Scott Hairston hit back-to-back, two-out, run-scoring singles in the fifth inning Thursday afternoon at Petco Park, the Padres had gone hitless in 20 consecutive at-bats with runners in scoring position.

On the season, the Padres are hitting .216 with runners in scoring position.

But their numbers with the bases loaded are even worse.

When David Eckstein approached the plate with one out and the bases loaded Thursday, the Padres were hitting .080 (2-for-25) with the bases loaded and were 0-for-10 with the bases loaded and less than two out.

In fact, with bases loaded and one out, Padres hitters had produced more double plays (four) than runs (three).

"Situational hitting has been a problem," said Eckstein after he lined a game-winning single to right.

PADRES 4, DIAMONDBACKS 3 (10 innings): David Eckstein's bases-loaded, one-out single in the 10th gave San Diego its second walk-off win in three games and its third on the season. The victory gave the Padres splits of the two-game series with Arizona and the four-game homestand.
