San Diego Padres Inside Pitch 2008-06-30

San Diego Padres Inside Pitch 2008-06-30
The Padres don't have the greatest history when it comes to winning.

San Diego suffered triple-digit losing seasons in four of its first six years after expansion and didn't have a winning team until the 10th season.

Midway through the franchise's 40th season, the overall winning percentage is around 46 percent.

But midway through the 2009 season, things are as bad as they've ever been. And the immediate future could be darker.

The Padres hit the road Sunday night after completing one of the worst interleague campaigns ever -- by any team -- with an eighth straight loss at Petco Park.

A quick synopsis:

--The Padres were 3-15 in interleague play. That equaled the major league record for the lowest winning percentage (.167) over a season and most interleague losses in a season. Only the Tampa Bay Devil Rays of 2003 and 2005 were also 3-15 in interleague play (four other teams had .167 percentages off 2-10 seasons).

--Eight straight home losses are the most suffered by the Padres in five seasons at Petco Park and the longest home losing streak since they lost eight straight May 30-June 14, 2002. Only twice before have the Padres lost eight straight games in a single homestand (1972 and 1974). The Padres' record for consecutive homes losses, which will be under assault come July 7 -- is 10 in 1974.

--And the Padres have just completed the part of the schedule that was to be most conducive to their hopes -- a run of 29 home games in a 38-game span. The Padres were 16-22 overall during the most favorable part of their schedule and 13-16 in the 29 home games.

--Now the Padres play 16 of their next 22 games on the road, where they are 11-25 this season, the third-worst in the major leagues.

MARINERS 9, PADRES 2: Ichiro Suzuki went 5-for-5 and Adrian Beltre drove in three runs with a decisive two-run homer and single as Seattle completed a three-game sweep of the Padres. The Mariners first series sweep of the season extended the Padres' longest losing streak of the season to eight straight games (all at home, a Petco Park record). They have also lost 12 of their last 13 games.
