"In the second half, I think, in all phases of the game, we need to perform better," Padres manager Bud Black said.
Black said the best thing about the first half of the season was "the emergence of Adrian Gonzalez as a force recognized around the league." Other highlights:
"Heath Bell continuing what he showed us last year," said Black of his standout setup relief pitcher. "The overall job by Scott Hairston and Jody Gerut. And Brian Giles coming back from his knee surgery."
The Padres set two major league records in the first half. And both were really examples of the Padres' futility:
--Four straight 2-1 wins from June 4-7. Over the first 95 games, the Padres were held to two or fewer runs 40 times. They were 6-34 in those games, four of those wins coming in a span of those four days.
--And on Saturday night, Greg Maddux became -- at 42 years and 89 days -- the oldest pitcher in major league history to steal a base. Which raises the question of why do you need you 42-year-old pitcher to steal second... except for the Padres, for which that represented a rally.
BRAVES 12, PADRES 3: The Braves scored three runs in the first Sunday after LHP Randy Wolf hit leadoff man Gregor Blanco with a 1-and-2 curve. Wolf gave up six runs on six hits in five innings. 3B Kevin Kouzmanoff was 3-for-4 with an RBI single and solo homer and LF Chase Headley hit a 434-foot homer, equaling the eighth-longest homer hit in Petco Park history.
