San Diego Padres Inside Pitch 2008-08-04

San Diego Padres Inside Pitch 2008-08-04
The trading deadline passed with Greg Maddux still a Padre... which raised the question about his chances of passing Roger Clemens into No. 8 on the all-time wins list by the end of this season.

If he could face the Giants every day, the chance would be great.

Maddux held the Giants to one run on two hits over six innings Sunday afternoon at Petco Park to pick up his second straight win -- after a career-worst 14 straight starts without a win -- and move to within two career wins of Clemens.

Clemens has 354 career wins. Maddux has 352 with up to 10 starts remaining this season, including two possible ones against the Giants.

Maddux, who also drove in the tying run Sunday with a single for his first RBI since Aug. 30, 2006, is 2-0 against San Francisco this season with a 1.38 ERA over four starts.

He now has 30 career wins (against 14 losses) and a career 2.78 ERA against the Giants. The only team he has beaten more than the Giants during his Hall of Fame career is the New York Mets (35).

Sunday marked only the seventh time in his career that Maddux allowed two or fewer hits with no walks over six or more innings. He also retired the last 10 Giants he faced. Maddux also lowered his ERA at Petco Park to 2.73 while winning a second straight game for the first time since April 7-13.

Maddux dismissed the trade rumors earlier in the week that he was headed to the Dodgers. "I'm just doing my job," he said. "You don't think about the outside stuff once you're between the lines."

PADRES 4, GIANTS 1: Rookie catcher Nick Hundley scored the Padres' first run on a Greg Maddux single Sunday after being hit by a pitch then drove in the decisive run with a sacrifice fly as the Padres salvaged one of three games in the weekend series against the Giants. Kevin Kouzmanoff, who ground into a key double play in each of the two losses, homered in the ninth for the Padres' final run. Greg Maddux allowed one run on two hits over six innings to pick up the 352nd win of his career -- moving to within two of Roger Clemens in the No. 8 slot.
