Given Khalil Greene's struggles, Luis Rodriguez has been at least an offensive upgrade at shortstop since Greene broke a bone in his left hand July 30 while slamming a storage chest out of frustration over a .213 average.

Since taking over at short, the switch-hitting Rodriguez has hit .306 (45-for-147) with 11 doubles, 10 RBIs and 16 runs. And since Aug. 30, Rodriguez is hitting .323 (21-for-65) with nine of those doubles.

He also has been solid at short.

Hopefully for the Padres, that is a short-term "been." Rodriguez suffered a strained right triceps muscle Tuesday night while making a throw from the hole behind third base.

With Rodriguez sidelined and Greene not ready to come back, that leaves Sean Kazmar as the Padres' only qualified shortstop. Kazmar was promoted from Class AA San Antonio on Aug. 12 and has made six starts.

ROCKIES 10, PADRES 3: Adrian Gonzalez gave the Padres a quick 2-0 lead in the first with his sixth homer in nine games. But the Rockies scored six runs on 13 hits in 4 2/3 innings against Shawn Estes and added a grand slam by Chris Iannetta off Charlie Haeger in the sixth.
