San Diego Padres Inside Pitch 2008-09-22
One of the things the Padres have liked about Cha Seung Baek is the right-hander's desire to take the ball.

Dating back to June 2, which was less than a week after Baek joined the Padres via a trade from Seattle for right-hander Jared Wells, Baek has answered the call for 19 straight starts.

That is the longest streak by an active Padres starter.

Sunday's game in Washington was a case in point about Baek's durability.

On Sept. 14, Baek had the shortest start of his career. After two innings, he was forced to leave a game against the Giants due to a strain in his right triceps.

With two weeks to go in the season, did the injury mean Baek was going to shut it down for 2008? Not exactly.

Baek threw 89 pitches Sunday and allowed only one run on five hits over seven innings to pick up the win. Over his last three starts, Baek has allowed two runs on 10 hits over 16 innings.

PADRES 6, NATIONALS 2: If the goal was to turn turtle, post the worst record in the major leagues and position themselves for the first overall pick in next June's draft, the Padres might have blown it in the nation's capital. With Kevin Kouzmanoff driving in three runs with a pair of doubles and Cha Seung Baek holding the Nationals to one run on five hits over seven innings, the Padres completed a three-game sweep of Washington to finish the series with a record two games better than the Nationals' mark.
