Wally Joyner resigned as the Padres' hitting coach Monday.

Joyner, 49, was in his first full season as the Padres' hitting coach, having replaced Merv Rettenmund midway through the 2007 season. He was the Padres' third hitting coach since Dave Magadan, now the batting coach of the Boston Red Sox, was fired in June of 2006.

The Padres rank last in the National League in runs scored and on-base percentage and near the bottom in batting average.

Although the Padres have had solid production from Adrian Gonzalez (35 homers and 116 RBI), Brian Giles (a .304 batting average and .391 on-base percentage) and Kevin Kouzmanoff, other players -- most notably Khalil Greene -- struggled this season.

"It bothers me a lot that I have come to the point where it is clear I have to move on," Joyner told The San Diego Union-Tribune. "It has become obvious to me the past few months that the organization's approach is different from mine."

Joyner's resignation resolves what could have been a sticky off-season issue.

Joyner, a career .289 hitter and a member of the Padres' 1998 National League championship team, has been a close personal friend of Padres general manager Kevin Towers since they attended BYU.

Joyner was seen as being one of several Padres coaches who could have been replaced this offseason.

Left unsaid was whether Joyner would remain with the club through the final week of the season and whether an interim would join the club. Former major league manager and former Padres bench coach Tony Muser filled in for Joyner last month when he left the team to be with his ill mother.
