San Diego Padres Notes, Quotes 2008-11-07
--1B Adrian Gonzalez has been awarded his first Gold Glove Award by a vote of National League managers and coaches. "I'm surprised with the candidates out there -- (Albert) Pujols, (Derrek) Lee, (Mark) Teixeira," said Gonzalez, 28. "I thought it might be tough for me to get something like this. It's rewarding, especially knowing who voted for the award. It makes you feel like people know what you are contributing." Gonzalez said he was particularly pleased to learn some voters chose him because of his throwing ability and aggressive throws. "I'm excited to know that was one of the reasons why I won the award," he said. "I do take pride in my throwing."

--Ted Simmons and Jim Lefebvre have been added to the coaching staff. Simmons succeeds Craig Colbert as the bench coach, and Lefebvre follows Wally Joyner as hitting coach. Joyner resigned during the final week of the season, and Colbert was released at the end of the season. Lefebvre, 66, has been the Padres' minor league hitting consultant since April 2006. Simmons, 59, began the 2008 season as bench coach of Milwaukee. Previously, he had spent nine seasons in the Padres organization as vice president of baseball operations (1999-2001) and major league scout and assistant to general manager Kevin Towers (2002-07).

--RF Brian Giles will know by Nov. 8 if the Padres are going to pick up his $9 million option for 2009 or exercise the contract's $3 million buyout. GM Kevin Towers said the Padres are leaning toward keeping Giles for 2009.

--Matt Vasgersian, the Padres' lead voice on television broadcasts for seven seasons, is leaving the team to join the MLB Network as its studio host for its nightly coverage.

--RHP Josh Geer, 25, could be a candidate for elbow reconstruction surgery. Geer, who was 2-1 with a 2.67 ERA in five late-season starts for the Padres last September, suffered an elbow strain in his final outing. Recent medical tests at the end of a throwing rehabilitation program showed "laxity" in the elbow.

--RHP Trevor Hoffman still hasn't gotten back to the Padres on their offer for 2009. The Padres want to retain the game's all-time saves leader, but Hoffman is officially a free agent and can shop his services elsewhere. Cleveland is said to have interest in Hoffman.

--LHP Nick Schmidt, the 23rd player taken in the 2007 draft, is pitching in the Padres' instructional program at their academy in the Dominican Republic. Schmidt, 23, had elbow reconstruction surgery at the end of the 2007 season. His fastball is up to 87 mph. Said director of scouting and player development Grady Fuson: "Nick is showing an easy, clean delivery ... pretty efficient, pretty good strikes."

--RHP Cesar Carrillo, 24, the 18th player selected in the 2005 draft, is pitching in the Arizona Fall League after having elbow reconstruction surgery in the first half of the 2007 season.

BY THE NUMBERS: 9 -- Padres who have won the Gold Glove Award, the latest being 1B Adrian Gonzalez. 20 -- Total National League Gold Gloves won by those nine players. $100,000 -- Bonus going to Gonzalez for winning his first Gold Glove.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Some people think it's unusual to take chances like on the throws I like to make. But I like to take the chances that help you win. And it makes the game more fun. Throwing is not something I just do. I work hard on plays at second, third and home in spring training. I make 40 to 50 throws a week during spring training." -- 1B Adrian Gonzalez, talking about his aggressive throwing strategy that played a role in Gonzalez winning his first National League Gold Glove Award.
