--RHP Trevor Hoffman is unlikely to sign with anyone until after the Dec. 1 deadline for teams to offer players arbitration. The Padres are unlikely to offer Hoffman arbitration -- given their financial woes -- meaning a team that signs Hoffman without the arbitration proviso would not lose a draft pick to the Padres. The Padres continue to say they are interested in re-signing the all-time saves leader, although the sides have not talked.
--If the Padres don't acquire an additional draft pick for losing Hoffman, next year would be the first time in a decade that they didn't get an additional pick before the end of the sandwich rounds. --General manager Kevin Towers denied reports that the Angels have contacted him regarding RHP Jake Peavy. "The only club we've heard from recently is the Chicago Cubs," Towers said.
--Former Padres catcher Terry Kennedy was hired as the manager of San Diego's Class AA affiliate in San Antonio. Kennedy, 52, was the Missions' hitting coach last season. Kennedy, the catcher on San Diego's 1984 National League championship team, was the independent Golden Baseball League Manager of the Year in 2005 while managing the San Diego Surf Dawgs. He previously spent six years managing in the minor league systems of the Dodgers, Cubs, Expos and Cardinals.
--Orv Franchuk, 64, will succeed Kennedy as hitting coach at San Antonio.
--Adam Bourassa (Mid-Atlantic) and Noah Jackson (Northern California) have been named area scouts for the Padres. Both are 27.
