--RHP Justin Germano signed with the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks, according to a report in Japan's Daily Yomiuri. Germano, 26, made 12 appearances (six starts) for the Padres this year, going 0-3 with a 5.98 ERA. In parts of four big-league seasons with San Diego and Cincinnati, Germano is 8-16 with a 5.27 ERA.
--RHP Trevor Hoffman was not offered arbitration by the Padres, even though that means another team that signs him would not have to give a draft pick to San Diego. The Padres continue to say they are interested in re-signing the all-time saves leader. Next year will be the first time in a decade that the Padres won't get a compensation pick before the end of the sandwich rounds.
--General manager Kevin Towers denied reports that the Angels have contacted him regarding RHP Jake Peavy. "The only club we've heard from recently is the Chicago Cubs," Towers said.
--Former Padres catcher Terry Kennedy was hired as the manager of San Diego's Class AA affiliate in San Antonio. Kennedy, 52, was the Missions' hitting coach last season. Kennedy, the catcher on San Diego's 1984 National League championship team, was the independent Golden Baseball League Manager of the Year in 2005 while managing the San Diego Surf Dawgs. He previously spent six years managing in the minor league systems of the Dodgers, Cubs, Expos and Cardinals.
--Orv Franchuk, 64, will succeed Kennedy as hitting coach at San Antonio.
--Adam Bourassa (Mid-Atlantic) and Noah Jackson (Northern California) have been named area scouts for the Padres. Both are 27.
