--RHP Trevor Hoffman, who departed the Padres by signing a free agent contract with Milwaukee over the winter, took out a full-page ad in the San Diego Union-Tribune to thank Padres fans and Padres personnel for his time with the club. The ad included a picture of Hoffman, wife Tracy, the couple's three sons and pet bulldog. Hoffman set baseball's all-time saves record as a Padre.

--C Henry Blanco was signed by the Padres as their backup catcher and mentor to 25-year-old sophomore Nick Hundley. So he surprised the Padres a bit when he said he might join Venezuela's World Baseball Classic team if manager Luis Sojo needed a third catcher. Blanco homered on a two-strike offering from Mariners ace Felix Hernandez in his first spring appearance with the Padres. "I got lucky," Blanco said.

--RF Brian Giles is seeking evidence from ex-girlfriend Cheri Olvera's medical providers to ascertain details of her claim that she suffered a miscarriage because of his alleged abuse. "They are trying to portray her as a gold digger and a lush," said Cary Goldstein, Olvera's attorney in her $10 million palimony suit against Giles. Giles has countersued.

--3B Kevin Kouzmanoff hasn't appeared in the field yet due to offseason shoulder surgery. However, he has two homers in his two games as a designated hitter.

--RHP Mark Prior canceled his first scheduled session throwing batting practice, but Padres manager Bud Black wasn't overly concerned. "We're going on how he feels," Black said. "We're being cautious."

--Greg Maddux departed the Padres camp after serving as an instructor for a week. He said he could return later but said he wouldn't be in the dugout for regular-season games. "I liked the coaching," Maddux said.

--RHP Nick Schmidt, who had elbow reconstruction surgery shortly after being taken in the first round of the 2007 draft, looked strong in his first outing this spring. "I like what I see," manager Bud Black said.

BY THE NUMBERS: 34 -- Pitchers in the Padres' camp. 28 -- Pitchers who appeared in the first three exhibition game. 1 -- Pitcher, LHP Joe Thatcher, who worked more than an inning in his first appearance.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "If I can catch a line drive this year, hopefully I'll make 30-plus starts." -- RHP Chris Young on his hopes for 2009 after he missed more than two months last year after being struck in the face by a May 21 liner off the bat of Albert Pujols.
