San Diego Padres Notes, Quotes 2009-04-11

San Diego Padres Notes, Quotes 2009-04-11
--There was a 51-minute rain delay at Petco Park Friday night, the Padres' first rain delay at home since last May 23. In the five-seasons-plus history of the Padres' downtown home, there has been but one rainout (April 4, 2006).

--SS Everth Cabrera, a 22-year-old Rule 5 rookie, ran through a stop sign of sorts Thursday. Cabrera was told to be ready to run for Edgar Gonzalez if Gonzalez got a single or double in the ninth. Instead, Gonzalez got his first career triple. And Cabrera sprinted onto the field, replacing Gonzalez. "Everth jumped the gun just a little bit," Padres manager Bud Black said.

--Tom Garfinkel was introduced Wednesday as the new president and chief operating officer of the Padres. He succeeds Dick Freeman, who retired March 31 during the start of the ownership transition from John Moores to a group led by Jeff Moorad. Garfinkel had served the Arizona Diamondbacks as COO under Moorad.

--Only nine members of the present cast were with the Padres on opening day in 2008.

--RHP Cla Meredith, who joined the Padres on May 1, 2006, has the most tenure among Padres relief pitchers. Counting the five new faces in the bullpen today, Meredith has worked with 47 other pitchers in the Padres bullpen since his arrival.

BY THE NUMBERS: 10-21 -- The Padres' final spring training record, the fourth-worst in the franchise's 40-year history.

6.85 -- The staff ERA this spring.

45 -- Pitchers who worked in at least one major league exhibition for the Padres this spring.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "When he's on, he's as good as anyone in this game. He can match up with anyone else's No. 1 and win. These last two (spring training) games, he's looked as good as I've ever seen him, down and sharp." -- Padres manager Bud Black on ace and 2007 National League Cy Young Award winner Jake Peavy, who remains the subject of trade rumors and is almost certain to be dealt for prospects if he gets off to a good start and the Padres don't.
