San Diego Padres Notes, Quotes 2009-05-07
--RHP Jake Peavy had a string of 13 consecutive scoreless innings going when Arizona's Justin Upton hit a two-run, scoreless-tie-breaking homer in the sixth inning Wednesday night at Petco Park. Peavy has now given up five homers in seven starts -- three of which directly beat him.

--RHP Duaner Sanchez was also stung by a Justin Upton homer Wednesday. Sanchez has allowed seven runs on 12 hits and six walks in his last seven appearances covering 5 1/3 innings.

--RHP Josh Geer took a shutout into the eighth inning Tuesday at Petco Park before giving up a solo homer to Rockies C Chris Iannetta. Geer finished the inning and allowed only the one run and five hits over eight innings despite working under the heat of the Padres' six-game losing streak. Said Geer: "There was a lot of pressure. I was ready to fight. That one pitch in the eighth inning kind of killed me and made me mad."

BY THE NUMBERS: 0-6 -- The Padres' record in the last six games started by staff aces Jake Peavy and Chris Young, through May 3.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Plays come in all shapes and sizes. To win, you have to make plays." -- Padres manager Bud Black, on Thursday after a two-hop throw from RF Brian Giles bounced through the legs of C Nick Hundley and rolled past RHP Luke Gregerson, who was backing up the plate, to allow the decisive run to score for the Dodgers.
