--LHP Wil Ledezma pitched five solid innings Thursday, earning himself at least one more start in the rotation spot usually filled by injured RHP Jake Peavy. Ledezma gave up one run on only two hits over five innings to lower his ERA to 4.25. Ledezma battled command problems and needed 86 pitches for five innings. --RHP Bryan Corey worked a scoreless inning of relief and has allowed only one earned run in 9 2/3 innings since being acquired by the Padres.
--Edgar Gonzalez is an infielder by trade, but he got his first major league start in left field Thursday with LHP John Lannan starting for the Nationals and Justin Huber unavailable to the Padres due to back spasms. Gonzalez responded with a two-run single.
--Going into Thursday, the No. 8 hitters in the Padres lineup were hitting .184 (34-for-134) this season with one homer and seven RBIs. That's a 21-RBI pace for the season. On Thursday, No. 8 hitters Edgar Gonzalez (two-run single) and Jody Gerut (three-run homer) combined for five RBIs -- a season best for the slot.
