San Diego Padres Notes, Quotes 2008-06-30
--3B Kevin Kouzmanoff extended his hitting streak to a career-high nine games Sunday (13-for-36 with four doubles, a triple, two homers and seven RBI), which matches the Padres longest hitting streak of the season (previously Adrian Gonzalez and Jody Gerut). Kouzmanoff has hit safely in all six games since he returned to the lineup after missing six games with a lower back strain. But he also also made three errors in the six games.

--LF Chase Headley has had exactly four at-bats in each of his first 12 games in the major leagues this season. He is also hitting .250 with three homers, although he has 17 strikeouts in 48 at-bats -- and has struck out in all but one game. Padres manager Bud Black believes the time Headley served with the Padres last summer has served him well. "It gave him a good foundation and perspective," said the manager. "He knows this is his profession and priority. He has a good head on his shoulders."

--RHP Chris Young, who threw 45 pitches in a three-inning simulated game Saturday afternoon, will have surgery Monday to repair a damaged septum and re-open the nasal passages damaged when he was hit in the face by an Albert Pujols line drive on May 21. Young hopes to return in late July.

--2B Tadahito Iguchi has started running, but he is still unable to work his arm (separated right shoulder).

--C Josh Bard still feels discomfort in his high ankle sprain when he squats but he will start hitting during the Padres six-game trip to Colorado and Arizona. He isn't expected to return before the All-Star break.

--RHP Trevor Hoffman, pitching in the ninth because he had worked only three innings over the past three weeks, gave up a homer to Jeff Clement Sunday. That is six homers allowed at Petco Park, or one more than he gave up at home over the first four full seasons of Petco Park.

BY THE NUMBERS: .428 -- The Padres all-time winning percentage in interleague play (83-111), ahead of only Pittsburgh (.376) among major league teams.

8 -- Straight losses the longest Padres losing streak since they lost nine in a row from May 14-23, 2003.

8 -- Straight home losses ties the franchise record for a single homestand and is within two of the overall club-record home losing streak set in 1974.

8-20 -- Padres record against left-handed starters.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "So what if they're hot... cool them off." -- Padres manager Bud Black, on the Padres running into the hot New York Yankees, Detroit Tigers and Minnesota Twins in interleague play.
