--OF Chip Ambres was designated for assignment to open a roster spot for RHP Chris Young. Ambres was 2-for-17 since being promoted from Class AAA Portland on July 8, including 0-for-4 with four strikeouts Sunday in Pittsburgh.

--LHP Shawn Estes will pitch a second bullpen session Wednesday and a simulated game Saturday before joining Class A Lake Elsinore next Tuesday to begin a rehab assignment. Estes, who has been sidelined since May 28 with a broken thumb on his throwing hand, figures he will make at least three rehab starts.

--2B Edgar Gonzalez is 1-for-24 over his last seven games with an error in each of the past two games.

--OF Scott Hairston has eight homers since July 5. But he is just 1-for-21 -- with the lone hit a home run -- since July 21.

--2B Tadahito Iguchi, who has been out since June 5 with a separated shoulder (suffered when he fell after unsuccessfully trying to dodge a line drive hit by Kevin Kouzmanoff while running the bases), started a rehab assignment with Class A Lake Elsinore. He went 0-for-3 with a walk and a strikeout. Iguchi is expected to spend seven to 10 days in the minors.

--RHP Brett Tomko will start his rehab assignment with Class A Lake Elsinore on Wednesday, then move immediately to Class AAA Portland.

--Petco Park will host half of the second-round games of the second World Baseball Championships. Petco Park hosted the first WBC semifinals and finals in 2006. Petco Park and Dolphin Stadium in Florida will host the second-round games to be played March 14-19. The semifinals and finals will be played at Dodger Stadium.

--RHP Kevin Cameron was activated from the 15-day disabled list and optioned to Class AAA Portland. He had been out since May 7 with a strained right elbow.

BY THE NUMBERS: 14 -- Major league seasons in which RHP Trevor Hoffman has had at least 20 saves, breaking the mark he shared with Lee Smith.
