--RHP Chris Young (right forearm strain) will return from the disabled list Sept. 1 when rosters are expanded. Pushing Young's return back a couple days will allow the Padres to start him with an expanded bullpen. He will be on a 75-pitch or five-inning limit. LHP Shawn Estes (broken thumb) will also be activated after the Sept. 1 expansion date.
--OF Jody Gerut is 7-for-22 with two triples, a homer and five RBIs in five-game hitting streak and is 15-for-42 (.357) over his last 11 games with three doubles, two triples, two homers and nine RBIs.
--RF Brian Giles extended his hitting streak to eight games (12-for-27) with a rally-starting pinch single Wednesday. Giles' average reached .300 for first time since July 25.
--1B Adrian Gonzalez got his third day of rest for the season Wednesday, sort of. Gonzalez didn't start, but he came in late and has still played in all 133 games the Padres have played.
