San Diego Padres Notes, Quotes 2008-08-29

San Diego Padres Notes, Quotes 2008-08-29
--OF Scott Hairston will miss the remainder of the season due to a torn ligament in his left thumb, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported. He will undergo surgery Friday. Hairston was hurt Wednesday while trying to make a diving catch of a drive to left-center field. OF Will Venable is expected to be recalled from Class AAA Portland to replace Hairston on the roster.

--RHP Chad Reineke gained a share of some history Tuesday night when he picked up his second career win against Arizona in a game in which the Diamondbacks' Brandon Webb was trying (unsuccessfully) to win his 20th game. Over the past 50 seasons, only three other pitchers with fewer than two career wins defeated an opposing pitcher seeking No. 20 -- Wayne Franklin vs. Roy Oswalt (2002), Rick Krueger vs. Ed Figueroa (1976) and Bill Gogolewski vs. Jim Palmer (1970).

--The Padres have reached extension agreements with four of their five minor league affiliates that had their contracts expiring with the end of this season. Class AAA Portland is committed to the Padres through 2010, Class A Lake Elsinore re-signed through 2012, Class A Fort Wayne signed through 2010 and short-season Class A Eugene re-signed through 2012. That leaves the Padres needing only to finalize an agreement with Class AA San Antonio, whose present working relationship is also scheduled to run out at the end of this season.

--1B Adrian Gonzalez missed his third start of the season Wednesday. But he entered the game in the ninth to keep his record perfect -- he has appeared in all 133 games.

--RHP Jake Peavy last winter built a 78-acre lake on land he owns in Alabama. Tropical Storm Fay raised the water level from four to 12 feet. "We have a couple streams that feed the lake, but that's still a lot of water," Peavy said.

--RHP Cha Seung Baek has allowed only three earned runs on 10 hits over 11 2/3 innings in last two starts at Petco Park, lowering his home ERA from 7.04 to 5.94.

BY THE NUMBERS: 2 -- Times this season the Padres have been swept by the Giants, who are managed by former Padres manager Bruce Bochy. 4-10 -- Padres' record against the Giants this season. 5 -- Losing streaks of five games or more for the Padres. 7 -- Leadoff homers for the Padres this season with Brian Giles delivering off the Giants' Kevin Correia Aug. 24 in San Francisco. 34 -- Walks allowed by Padres pitchers in the 0-6 road trip. 82nd -- Loss for the Padres on Aug. 24, assuring them of their first losing season since moving into Petco Park in 2004.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "I just saw some pitches there were out of location and some hard-hit balls." -- Padres manager Bud Black on why he pulled starting pitcher Josh Banks with one run in, the bases loaded and no one out in the fourth Sunday with the Padres ahead 3-0 in San Francisco.
