Hairston tore a ligament off the bone in the thumb, which needs to be surgically repaired.
--CF Will Venable, 25, was promoted from Triple-A Portland to fill OF Scott Hairston's spot on the roster and tripled in his first major league at-bat Friday night. Venable, the Padres' seventh-round pick in 2005, was hitting .292 with 26 doubles, four triples, 14 homers and 58 RBI with Portland. He also stole seven bases. --RHP Josh Geer, 25, was promoted from Portland and will start Saturday night's game against Colorado at Petco Park. Geer, the Padres' third-round pick in 2005 and the Texas League Pitcher of the Year in 2007, was 8-9 with a 4.54 ERA with the Beavers.
