--RHP Jake Peavy flew home to San Diego Friday morning to be with wife Katie as she gave birth Friday afternoon to the couple's third child -- and third son. Katie's due date was in October. Peavy passed on his scheduled start Friday night against the Nationals to be with his wife.

--1B Adrian Gonzalez continued his late-season RBI run Friday night with three against the Nationals, including the Padres final two in the 14th in the 11-6 victory over the Nationals. Over his last 12 games, Gonzalez has 19 RBIs on 16-for-49 hitting with three doubles and six homers. Gonzalez has gone from 28 homers and 95 RBIs to 34 homers and 114 RBIs.

--LF Chase Headley went a career-best 4-for-6 with two doubles and a triple Friday night in Washington, giving him nine hits, including five doubles and a triple, in his last 21 at-bats to raise his average 12 points to .269.

--CF Will Venable also had career-highs of three hits and three RBIs, including his second homer, in Friday night's 14-inning marathon in Washington.

--RHP Dirk Hayhurst got a call at 1 a.m. Friday saying he would be starting that night against the Nationals because Jake Peavy was headed home. Hayhurst, who worked in relief only two games earlier, allowed four runs on four hits and three walks in 3 1/3 innings.
