San Diego Padres Roster Report 2009-04-07

San Diego Padres Roster Report 2009-04-07
The Padres' offense probably will be a bit improved over last year. The pitching, however, was a mess. Three arms were brought in from outside the organization in late March.

PLAYER NOTES:

--1B Adrian Gonzalez was party to an interesting twist Tuesday. Gonzalez last year finished third in the National League with 119 RBIs, a figure that represented 19.3 percent of all the runs scored by the Padres. So why pitch to Gonzalez with the game on the line? That might have been the message learned by the Dodgers on Tuesday. With runners on second and third in the sixth, Gonzalez smacked a line drive to right that was just foul. It would have given the Padres a 4-3 lead. Hiroki Kuroda then walked Gonzalez to load the bases. And Gonzalez walked again in the ninth with a runner in scoring position.

--OF/PH Cliff Floyd went on the 15-day disabled list Monday morning with a right shoulder strain that had bothered the veteran for most of the last month. A day earlier, Padres manager Bud Black had declared Floyd ready to start the season after he was the designated hitter in Saturday night's final exhibition at Anaheim.

--OF Drew Macias was recalled from Class AAA Portland hours before the season opener against the Dodgers at Petco Park to replace injured Cliff Floyd. During spring training, manager Bud Black cited Macias, 26, as one of the Padres' most improved players this spring. Macias is also considered the top all-around defensive outfielder in the system, and he has the best arm.

--3B Kevin Kouzmanoff, who hits fifth in the Padres' order behind 1B Adrian Gonzalez, was 0-for-2 and was unable to get the ball out of the infield in his two at-bats after the Dodgers walked Gonzalez with two outs and runners in scoring position.

--RHP Jake Peavy was 13-1 lifetime with a 2.32 ERA in 22 starts against the Dodgers and 3-0 with a 0.45 ERA in three opening-day starts before being beaten 4-1 by the Dodgers on Tuesday. Peavy gave up four runs (three earned, the other scoring after his throwing error) on seven hits over seven innings.
