San Diego Padres Roster Report 2009-04-08
The Padres' offense probably will be a bit improved over last year. The pitching, however, was a mess. Three arms were brought in from outside the organization in late March.

PLAYER NEWS:

--3B Kevin Kouzmanoff went 2-for-4 Tuesday night for the 85th multi-hit game of his career. Kouzmanoff had the seventh triple of his career and scored two of the Padres' four runs.

--RHP Heath Bell struck out the side around a one-out walk Tuesday night to record the third save of his major league and Padres career and his first since Aug. 23, 2007. The save left him 549 behind Trevor Hoffman's club record of 552 and 551 shy of Hoffman's major league mark of 554. Said Bell: "I'm not going to beat his all-time record. His Padre record is my goal."

--1B Adrian Gonzalez beat the shift the Dodgers are employing against him -- three infielders on the right side with 3B Casey Blake just to the left of second -- by singling to the right of Blake in the sixth. But when Gonzalez came up with a runner in scoring position in the third, the Dodgers walked him for the third time in two games.

--RHP Edwin Moreno made his major league debut Tuesday night. And after walking two of the first two hitters he faced, Moreno struck out Orlando Hudson and got Manny Ramirez to pop out on a 2-and-1 changeup.

--RHP Chris Young put a 12.35 spring ERA behind him by allowing two runs on five hits over six innings, marking the first time in his career that he went six innings in his first outing of the season. "In my opinion, spring training is overrated," Young said.

--Eleven members of the opening-day roster made their debuts in a Padres uniform Monday. Four were spending their first day in the major leagues. And when RHP Walter Silva pitches against the Dodgers on Wednesday, he will be playing in his first game in the United States.

MEDICAL WATCH:

RHP Mark Prior (right shoulder surgeries in April 2007 and June 2008) was progressing as the Padres broke camp. "If he's healthy, Mark's my ace in the hole," Padres general manager Kevin Towers said. If Prior continues to advance, he could join the Padres in May.

OF Cliff Floyd (right shoulder strain) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 5.

RHP Cha Seung Baek (strained right forearm) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 30.

RHP Mike Adams (right shoulder surgery in October 2008) went on the 15-day disabled list April 2, and he was transferred to the 60-day DL on April 5. He had not resumed throwing from the mound as of March 27.

RHP Mark Worrell (Tommy John elbow surgery in March 2009) went on the 15-day disabled list April 2, and he was transferred to the 60-day DL on April 5. He is out for the season.
