San Diego Padres Roster Report 2009-04-14

San Diego Padres Roster Report 2009-04-14
The Padres were looking for protection for 1B Adrian Gonzalez. In the season-opening series against the Dodgers, Joe Torre refused to let Gonzalez beat him and pitched around the cleanup hitter. Gonzalez walked four times with runners in scoring position. The Padres' No. 5 hitter, Kevin Kouzmanoff, went 0-for-4 behind Gonzalez in those situations, prompting manager Bud Black to say adjustments might have to be made. With Kouzmanoff off to a 1-for-7 start in runners-in-scoring-position situations, Chase Headley batted fifth (and hit a two-run homer) April 12 while Kouzmanoff was dropped to sixth.

PLAYER NEWS:

--RHP Heath Bell picked up his fourth save in as many opportunities with a perfect ninth against his old team. Bell has worked 3 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and two walks against three strikeouts.

--LF Chase Headley hit fifth for the second straight game (0-for-3 with two walks) behind 1B Adrian Gonzalez with Kevin Kouzmanoff again hitting sixth. The move was made after Kouzzmanoff was 1-for-7 in his first five starts in situations with runners in scoring position.

--RHP Walter Silva entered the fifth inning holding a 5-1 lead and was one out from his first major league win with only a runner on first. But a walk, a run-scoring single and a three-run homer by David Wright knocked him out of the game with the score tied 5-5.

--2B David Eckstein was 3-for-5 with two doubles and is 7-for-19 in the last five games with four doubles and three RBI -- after a 1-for-9 start to the season.

--CFs Jody Gerut (3-for-8, two walks, a homer and three runs scored) and Scott Hairston (4-for-8, a walk, a three-run homer, three runs scored and a stolen base) have gone 7-for-16 with two homers, four RBI, six runs scored and three walks for a .526 on-base percentage over the Padres' last four games.
