San Diego Padres Roster Report 2009-04-20

San Diego Padres Roster Report 2009-04-20
PH Cliff Floyd might be ready to join the Padres from the disabled list this week (out since just before the season's first pitch with a shoulder strain). But the Padres' more immediate need is finding a backup shortstop. With the hand injury suffered by Everth Cabrera, the Padres' only backup infielder is Edgar Gonzalez.

PLAYER NEWS:

--RHP Walter Silva, the Padres' 32-year-old rookie out of the Mexican League, went on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with a forearm strain suffered while hitting during his April 13 start in New York.

--RHP Josh Geer was promoted from Class AAA Portland to make RHP Walter Silva's scheduled start Sunday and gave up two runs (one earned) on six hits over seven innings -- becoming the 11th starter in major league history to allow two or fewer runs in his first six major league starts while going at least five innings in each outing.

--3B Kevin Kouzmanoff raised his average 85 points to .280 after back-to-back three-hit games Saturday and Sunday in Philadelphia. Kouzmanoff won Saturday night's game with a three-run homer off Phillies closer Brad Lidge. He also had a game-winning hit Thursday in New York after starting the season 1-for-9 in runner-in-scoring-position situations.

MEDICAL WATCH:

INF Everth Cabrera (sore left hand) might have broken the hamate bone in his left hand during the April 19 game. He almost certainly will be placed on the disabled list.

RHP Walter Silva (right forearm strain) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 14. Manager Bud Black said he likely would be out longer than the minimum time.

OF Cliff Floyd (right shoulder strain) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 5. He could begin a rehab assignment in mid-April.

RHP Cha Seung Baek (strained right forearm) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 30.

RHP Mike Adams (right shoulder surgery in October 2008) went on the 15-day disabled list April 2, and he was transferred to the 60-day DL on April 5. He had not resumed throwing from the mound as of March 27.

RHP Mark Worrell (Tommy John elbow surgery in March 2009) went on the 15-day disabled list April 2, and he was transferred to the 60-day DL on April 5. He is out for the season.

RHP Mark Prior (right shoulder surgeries in April 2007 and June 2008) was progressing as the Padres broke camp. "If he's healthy, Mark's my ace in the hole," Padres general manager Kevin Towers said. If Prior continues to advance, he could join the Padres in May.
