San Diego Padres Roster Report 2009-04-21

San Diego Padres Roster Report 2009-04-21
PH Cliff Floyd might be ready to join the Padres from the disabled list this week (out since just before the season's first pitch with a shoulder strain). But the Padres' more immediate need is finding a backup shortstop. With the hand injury suffered by Everth Cabrera, the Padres' only backup infielder is Edgar Gonzalez.

PLAYER NEWS:

--INF Edgar Gonzalez has triples for his first two hits of the season. The last major leaguer to have triples for his first two hits was Kansas City's Tony Pena in 2007. The only Padre to do it was John Sipin in 1969.

--RHP Kevin Correia, the scheduled starter Monday night in Philadelphia, will be pushed toward the end of the rotation, which could be reshuffled again after Thursday's day off before a three-game homestand against Pittsburgh.

--2B David Eckstein might look like a natural to become the Padres' backup shortstop with Everth Cabrera going on the 60-day disabled list. But Eckstein signed with the Padres as a free agent last winter largely on the promise that he would be playing second base.

--RF Brian Giles is 4-for-27 on the first six games of the Padres' road trip, and he hasn't drawn a walk since April 11. After 13 games, Giles is hitting .151 with a .217 on-base percentage. He is 4-for-19 with runners in scoring position.

MEDICAL WATCH:

INF Everth Cabrera (broken hamate bone in left hand) was placed on the 60-day disabled list and will need surgery. He's expected to be out until the All-Star break.

RHP Walter Silva (right forearm strain) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 14. Manager Bud Black said he likely would be out longer than the minimum time.

OF Cliff Floyd (right shoulder strain) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 5. He could begin a rehab assignment in mid-April.

RHP Cha Seung Baek (strained right forearm) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 30.

RHP Mike Adams (right shoulder surgery in October 2008) went on the 15-day disabled list April 2, and he was transferred to the 60-day DL on April 5. He had not resumed throwing from the mound as of March 27.

RHP Mark Worrell (Tommy John elbow surgery in March 2009) went on the 15-day disabled list April 2, and he was transferred to the 60-day DL on April 5. He is out for the season.

RHP Mark Prior (right shoulder surgeries in April 2007 and June 2008) was progressing as the Padres broke camp. "If he's healthy, Mark's my ace in the hole," Padres general manager Kevin Towers said. If Prior continues to advance, he could join the Padres in May.
