--RHP Cha Seung Baek, who opened the season on the disabled list with a right forearm strain, threw a bullpen session Tuesday in San Francisco and will throw another Friday. If he clears that, he could start a rehab assignment next week.
--INF Chris Burke was re-acquired by the Padres on Tuesday to replace injured SS Everth Cabrera. The Padres had sold Burke, 29, to the Seattle Mariners on March 29 for "cash considerations," the same term used to announce his return to the Padres. Burke, who has a .241 career average, was hitting .237 with Class AAA Tacoma. Burke can play all four infield positions plus both corner outfield slots, adding versatility to the Padres, who are carrying eight relief pitchers and only four bench players.
--SS Everth Cabrera had surgery Tuesday afternoon to repair the fractured hook of the hamate bone in his left hand. Cabrera was placed on the 60-day disabled list. Normal rehab for the injury is six to eight weeks, but even if Cabrera healed in six weeks, the Padres would like the 22-year-old rookie Rule 5 acquisition to have an extended rehab assignment.
MEDICAL WATCH:
INF Everth Cabrera (broken hamate bone in left hand) went on the 60-day disabled list April 20. He had surgery April 21, and he's expected to be out six to eight weeks before beginning an extended rehab assignment.
RHP Walter Silva (right forearm strain) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 14. Manager Bud Black said he likely would be out longer than the minimum time.
OF Cliff Floyd (right shoulder strain) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 5. He had his right knee drained April 18, delaying a possible rehab assignment.
RHP Cha Seung Baek (strained right forearm) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 30. He threw a bullpen session April 21 and will throw another April 24. After that, he could start a rehab assignment.
RHP Mike Adams (right shoulder surgery in October 2008) went on the 15-day disabled list April 2, and he was transferred to the 60-day DL on April 5. He had not resumed throwing from the mound as of March 27.
RHP Mark Worrell (Tommy John elbow surgery in March 2009) went on the 15-day disabled list April 2, and he was transferred to the 60-day DL on April 5. He is out for the season.
RHP Mark Prior (right shoulder surgeries in April 2007 and June 2008) was progressing as the Padres broke camp. "If he's healthy, Mark's my ace in the hole," Padres general manager Kevin Towers said. If Prior continues to advance, he could join the Padres in May.
