Shortly after the Padres signed former A's starter Chad Gaudin to a minor league contract April 12 (after he was released by the Chicago Cubs), Padres general manager Kevin Towers said Gaudin would be in the Padres' rotation "long before the season was over." It looks like Gaudin, who has worked 8 2/3 scoreless innings in two starts, will be promoted from Class AAA Portland Tuesday to replace Hill in the rotation. Gaudin will be working with normal rest while RHP Josh Geer, who came on in relief for Hill last Saturday night, will continue to start in Hill's slot.
PLAYER NEWS: --SS Luis Rodriguez was hospitalized overnight Saturday after suffering an allergic reaction to some food Saturday during batting practice. Rodriguez was on the field when he felt ill and began having trouble breathing. The reaction has apparently been traced to some ceviche Rodriguez ate before the Padres took the field to practice. "It was ceviche," said Rodriguez. "I like it, but no more." Rodriguez returned to the Padres clubhouse Sunday, but missed a second straight game.
--RHP Cha Seung Baek will begin a rehab assignment with Class A Lake Elsinore Tuesday night. Baek, who has been out since the start of the season with a forearm strain, might need three rehab starts, said Bud Black.
--RHP Duaner Sanchez hasn't worked since April 18 due to soreness in his forearm that Black said made him a candidate for the disabled list earlier this week. But because the Padres had an extra reliever in the bullpen, they didn't need to put Sanchez on the disabled list.
MEDICAL WATCH:
SS Luis Rodriguez (food allergy) was hospitalized April 25. He returned to the team on April 26 but did not play.
RHP Shawn Hill (right elbow inflammation) went on the 15-day disabled list April 25.
RHP Walter Silva (right forearm strain) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 14. Manager Bud Black said he likely would be out longer than the minimum time.
OF Cliff Floyd (inflamed right knee) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 5 with a right shoulder strain. He recovered from the shoulder injury when the knee problem began. Floyd is scheduled to have an MRI exam April 23.
RHP Cha Seung Baek (strained right forearm) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 30. He threw a bullpen session April 21 and will throw another April 24. He will start a rehab assignment on April 28.
INF Everth Cabrera (broken hamate bone in left hand) went on the 60-day disabled list April 20. He had surgery April 21, and he's expected to be out six to eight weeks before beginning an extended rehab assignment.
RHP Mike Adams (right shoulder surgery in October 2008) went on the 15-day disabled list April 2, and he was transferred to the 60-day DL on April 5. He had not resumed throwing from the mound as of March 27.
RHP Mark Worrell (Tommy John elbow surgery in March 2009) went on the 15-day disabled list April 2, and he was transferred to the 60-day DL on April 5. He is out for the season.
RHP Mark Prior (right shoulder surgeries in April 2007 and June 2008) was progressing as the Padres broke camp. "If he's healthy, Mark's my ace in the hole," Padres general manager Kevin Towers said. If Prior continues to advance, he could join the Padres in May.
