The Padres won an extra-inning game Thursday afternoon as David Eckstein hit a bases loaded single in the ten for a 4-3 final. However, there was a very odd play in the bottom of the eighth that could have led to the Padres scoring the go-ahead run then. Gerut and Kouzmanoff singled to start the inning, putting runners on 1st and 2nd. Nick Hundley is asked to sacrifice and bunts it back to the pitcher, Juan Gutierrez. He decides to throw to third. I didnt think it was a good decision, but on top of that he rushes the throw. It bounces in front of third, but Mark Reynolds makes a fantastic scoop to save the throw from going into leftfield.
Gerut beat the ball to the bag, except he slid feet first with his foot up. So his foot was over the bag instead of being on the bag when Reynolds caught the ball. Gutierrezs mistake gets neutralized by Geruts poor slide.
