Padres general manager Kevin Towers said yesterday that if he doesn't find a new employer soon for ace Jake Peavy, he might commit to keeping Peavy until the start of the 2009 season.
The Padres' only substantive talks concerning Peavy are with the Cubs, Towers said, and the two sides aren't close. Towers said Peavy, who has the protection of a no-trade clause, has displayed zero desire to play for the Yankees or any other American League team. "I want to know what we have with him by the time we leave the meetings," Towers told reporters. "By Thursday, either we'll have [a trade] or we'll start thinking about saying that he'll be with us for the start of the '09 season."
